“That’s not the fucking point, Tony.”
“Language,” the engineer quipped back, answering Steve out of necessity rather than actual care, “And there is no point, Steve. I made a call. It worked. I’m fine. Make like a dying tree and leaf me alone.”
Steve growled, hand tugging at his sensitive follicles. Of course, Tony makes excuses; apparently, taking the full impact of a BMW going 180 was a good call.
“Tony,” He tried to reason, “You should have—“
“Have what? Let you take the hit?” Tony swiveled around in his chair, raising his welding mask, “Absolutely not. You’ve got a serum, but you don’t have indestructible bones. The suit is designed for this type of thing, so you can fuck off your high and mighty horse.”
“I would fuck off if I had the peace of mind that my fucking boyfriend isn’t trying to get himself killed!” Steve screamed, veins popping out on his neck and forehead, “You made a fucking awful call, and if I didn’t know better, I would kick you off this goddamn team and put your Italian ass back in rehab for suicidal tendencies! God damn, Tony, you got hit with a car that made the reactor flicker! Again!”
Steve stepped forward and jabbed a finger at Tony’s chest to emphasize his point.
“Howard wouldn’t have pulled this kind of shit,” He growled, feeling his subconscious crying for him to stop, “He would have found a way to cut that wire. What happened to that? What happened to that Tony Stark?”
It was quiet in the lab for a moment, Steve’s words hanging in the air like mustard gas.
“I took your advice, and then I fell in love with you,” Tony replied, eyes not betraying emotion, “And now, I’m not sure which came back to bite my ass more.”
He swiveled back around, putting the welding mask down over his face. Even as Steve tried to apologize, and finally left, he didn’t see the tears that rolled down Tony’s cheeks. He didn’t bother wiping them away.
“Jay, lab lockdown. Let’s see if Steve makes good on that rehab promise when he finds me tomorrow.”
